Curriculum

Pre-School

The preschool program teaches several key learning skills on an appropriate developmental level.

The curriculum is based on teaching a letter each week through hands on activities. Also included throughout the curriculum are:

  • Fine Motor Skills -scissor use, holding a pencil correctly
  • Gross Motor Skills - running, jumping, balance
  • Social Skills - interacting appropriately with peers
  • Colors, shapes, numbers, seasons, days of week and months
  • Religion - basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Computers - Students are introduced to using a computer in a laboratory setting. The students become familiar with the equipment in a computer lab. Furthermore, students are instructed on how to take care of a computer and use age appropriate software to help enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. No Grade is given at this age for computers
  • Physical Education


Kindergarten

Self-Contained Kindergarten:

  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Computers - Students review the rules of using a computer in a laboratory setting. Students begin the process of learning how to log onto a network with a username and password. The students engage in activities related to basic phonics and math skills as well as become familiar with the equipment in a computer lab. Furthermore, students are instructed on lab etiquette and work on activities designed to help enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Students will begin learning the layout of a keyboard as a preview to typing. Students are introduced to all Microsoft Office Products. Students learn age appropriate internet safety with Faux Paw the Techno Cat. No grade is given at this age for computers.

First Grade

The first grade students are being taught many subjects daily. They also have the opportunity to participate in specials, centers, and library time.

  • Religion -The first graders are introduced to a new chapter every week. They learn new vocabulary and names of important people in Bible stories.
  • Reading - Each week the students are introduced to a new story which involves high frequency words, practice book pages, and art projects.
  • English - The children have been learning punctuation, capitalization, nouns, and action words. These areas are enforced throughout the week through various worksheets and activities.
  • Spelling - Each week the children are expected to learn six unit words and complete practice book pages in relation to those unit words.
  • Mathematics - Basic Math skills - addition to 12 and 3 number adding. Students work with patterns, skip counting, and number order.
  • Handwriting - The children practice letters everyday through repetition. The book focuses on one letter each day.
  • Phonics - Short vowel sounds - beginning and ending sounds and long vowels.
  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Computers - Students review the rules of using a computer in a laboratory setting. Students will receive their first individual username and password. The students engage in activities related to basic phonics and math skills as well as become familiar with the equipment in a computer lab. Furthermore, students are instructed on lab etiquette and work on activities designed to help enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Students will continue to learn the layout of a keyboard as a preview to typing. Students begin to learn basic functions of all Microsoft Office Products. Students learn age appropriate internet safety with Faux Paw the Techno Cat. This is the first year students will receive a satisfactory/non satisfactory grade for computers.

Second Grade

Self-Contained Level 2

  • Religion - A primary focus of instruction in grade two is the preparation to meet Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The children learn about the Sacrament as a sign of God's forgiveness and are encouraged to show their love by acts of penance. The learn to share God's peace and forgiving love with others. By early May, pupils are aware that Christ come to them in Communion and unites them with Himself and one another. Prior to the date of the Sacrament of First Communion, pupils of St. Angela School and St. Angela Parish come together for a full day of prayer, preparation and reflection on this special Sacrament. Activities promote fellowship and spiritual growth. Children come away from this retreat grateful for God's love, empowered to live the Mass by serving Him and one another..
  • Spanish - Español Para Ti program, students will be able to say simple greetings and know vocabulary words. They will also learn to pray in Spanish.
  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Computers - Students will begin to learn all the parts of the computer and will be able to name all the parts correctly. Students will begin entry level typing. Students learn most basic functions of all Microsoft Office Products. Students learn age appropriate internet safety with Faux Paw the Techno Cat. Students receive a satisfactory/non satisfactory grade for computers at this level.

Third Grade

Self-Contained Level 3

  • Computers - This is the first year students will receive a letter grade for computers. Students will learn all the parts of the computer and will be able to name all the parts correctly. Students will have quizzes at this level. Students will begin typing with Garfield Typing Pal. Students will do in class assignments using all the basics of Microsoft Office Products. Students learn age appropriate internet safety with Faux Paw the Techno Cat.

Fourth Grade

  • Religion - Concentration on The Ten Commandments and the Beatitude.
  • Reading - Anthology of literature; reading skills; vocabulary; age appropriate novel.
  • English - Grammar rules; developing skills progressively.
  • Spelling - Focuses on phonetic spelling and the development thereof.
  • Mathematics - Focuses on place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, graphing, measurement and geometry, fractions and probability
  • Science - Life science (plants, animals, humans), physical science, earth science.
  • Social Studies - Regions of the United States of America; study of the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Creative Writing - Focuses on continuation of primary lessons through organizing & writing paragraphs, narrative expository, and persuasive papers.
  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Computers - Students at this level will receive a letter grade for computers. Students will review and will be tested on all the parts of the computer. Students will have quizzes at this level. Students will begin graded typing with Ultra Key 5. Students will do in class assignments using all the basics of Microsoft Office Products. Students will have a project during the last nine weeks that will use all of their Microsoft Office Skills. Students learn age appropriate internet safety with the Carnegie Cyber Academy.

Fifth Grade

  • Religion - Focuses on the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, the center of Christian life.
  • Reading - Anthology of literature; reading skills; vocabulary; age appropriate novel.
  • English - Grammar rules; developing writing skills based on grammar rules.
  • Spelling - Developing spelling skills (oral/written.
  • Mathematics - Focuses on the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Measurements and geometry will also be taught.
  • Science - Life science (plants, animals, humans), physical science, earth science.
  • Social Studies - Focuses on the history of the United States from exploration to the 20th Century.
  • Creative Writing - Focuses on continuation of primary lessons through organizing & writing paragraphs, narrative expository, and persuasive papers.
  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Computers - Students at this level will receive a letter grade for computers. Students will have quizzes at this level. Students will begin graded typing with Ultra Key 5. Students will do in class assignments using all the basics of Microsoft Office Products. Students at this level will begin using more advanced Microsoft Office skills to get them ready for Middle School Technology. Students will have a project during the last nine weeks that will use all of their Microsoft Office Skills. Students learn age appropriate internet safety.
  • Composition - Students will be introduced to the 6 writing traits and various writing techniques. Students will have homework and in class assignments. Students will be able to use Criterion writing software to help them revise and edit their writing. The Criterion technology allows the students to have immediate feedback on their writing. This allows them to revise and edit their work while the ideas are fresh in their mind. Student's composition grade is part of their English grade.

Sixth Grade

  • Religion - Our focus is a study of the Old Testament tracing our faith formation from Abraham.
  • Reading - An introduction to the genres of literature. Students will read for comprehension.
  • English - Concentration on grammar and learning how to use the parts of speech correctly
  • Spelling - In addition to spelling twenty words a week, students will know the definition of challenge words.
  • Science - Earth science focusing on basic structure of the planet Earth (strata, core composition, tectonics, weather and environment).
  • Technology - Build upon skill levels in keyboarding, Microsoft office applications, and computer history learned in previous years.
  • Music- Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Composition - Students will be introduced to the 6 writing traits and various writing techniques. Students will have homework and in class assignments. Students will be able to use Criterion writing software to help them revise and edit their writing. The Criterion technology allows the students to have immediate feedback on their writing. This allows them to revise and edit their work while the ideas are fresh in their mind. Student's composition grade is part of their English grade.
  • Mathematics - The sixth grade math course incorporates basic Algebra skills with geometric concepts. Students continue to work with fractions and decimal numbers as well as begin to review types of numbers and strategies for solving simple equations

Seventh Grade

  • Reading - Students will read and analyze various pieces of literature from different genres.
  • English - Our focus is on learning the parts of speech and putting them into practice.
  • Spelling - Students will have ten words to define weekly. They are responsible for spelling these words also.
  • Science - Physical science focusing on chemistry and the periodic table as well as physics.
  • Social Studies
  • Technology - Build upon skill levels in keyboarding, Microsoft office applications, and computer history learned in previous years.
  • Music - Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Composition - Students will be introduced to the 6 writing traits and various writing techniques. Students will have homework and in class assignments. Students will be able to use Criterion writing software to help them revise and edit their writing. The Criterion technology allows the students to have immediate feedback on their writing. This allows them to revise and edit their work while the ideas are fresh in their mind. Student's composition grade is part of their English grade.
  • Religion
  • Mathematics - Seventh grade students enroll in the Pre-Algebra course to help prepare them for concepts that will be applied in the following year's Algebra course. Concepts for discussion and review include: understanding different types of numbers, working with fractions, solving and graphing equations, developing basic geometry skills, and converting among different types of numbers.

Eighth Grade

  • Religion - Students will continue to develop their ideas of Christianity and Catholicism through class discussions and activities as well as reading and interpreting Biblical passages. Students will prepare for Confirmation as well. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to develop ideas of how to incorporate Christian ideals into their own lives.
  • English - Students will review parts of speech and learn about verbals. They will also write the following pieces: a narrative, a persuasive expository, and a descriptive essay.
  • Science - Life science focusing on cells, heredity, and classification of scientific genus.
  • Technology - Build upon skill levels in keyboarding, Microsoft office applications, and computer history learned in previous years.
  • Music- Learn basic musical notation, how to read and follow manuscript, sing in harmony within a group, liturgical music.
  • Literature and Spelling - Students will develop language arts skills by reading assigned and individual reading selections. Comprehension skills will be reinforced through the using of questioning techniques, writing activities, and class discussions. Students will also work on improving reading skills by enhancing vocabulary comprehension. Moreover, students will also be assessed on spelling and vocabulary skills throughout the course.
  • Research - Students will learn basic research skills using technology and traditional research tools. The student will build on their basic six traits of writing skills from Composition class. They will add research skills including: looking for creditable sources of information, how to take notes for a research paper, using footnotes and endnotes, and writing a bibliography. Student research projects include: science fair project topics, Saint research for their Confirmation Saint report in religion class, "How Stuff Works project,and a research topic of their choice. Student's research grade is part of their English grade.
  • Mathematics - This course is for eighth grade students. Throughout the year we will review concepts such as converting numbers, understanding and solving various types of equations and inequalities, solving proportions, and graphing equations and inequalities
